From the boardwalks, Perito Moreno is a wall of broken blue ice. An ice trek takes you onto its uneven surface, where crampons bite into small ridges and meltwater threads through the glacier. The route changes with the ice, so choose the amount of walking you want rather than a photograph of a particular cave or pool.
Hielo & Aventura operates the three treks compared here: Minitrekking, Minitrekking 2 and Big Ice. Different booking companies sell places on these excursions. Your first decision is the trek; your second is who sells it, with which transport and cancellation terms.
Our recommendation: Start with standard Minitrekking for the shorter ice experience. Choose Big Ice if you meet its stricter requirements and want substantially more glacier time. Minitrekking 2 adds a longer shore and moraine walk, not extra time on the ice.

Minitrekking with El Calafate Transfers
For a first visit without a car, we favour a clearly specified transfer-and-boardwalk package. The linked Howlanders listing includes those services, making it easier to see the glacier from land as well as walk on the ice. Hielo & Aventura leads the glacier activity; Howlanders is the booking provider.
Minitrekking with El Calafate Transfers and Walkways
For ages 8-65, subject to the operator's full eligibility rules. A standard Minitrekking booking that includes the El Calafate return journey, boat crossing, guiding, crampons and a boardwalk visit. Park entry and food are extra. Confirm your pickup address and departure time before making other plans that day.
Sold by Howlanders, product 120233P53. The checked listing offers cancellation up to 24 hours before departure; confirm the local-time deadline and current terms when booking. Its booking-group cap does not replace the operator's ice-subgroup limit.
Driving yourself? Howlanders also sells Minitrekking with optional transfers on Viator. Select the port-only option and reach Puerto Bajo las Sombras at the confirmed time. Its hotel transport and boardwalk visit depend on the selected option; park entry and meals are extra. This is another way to book standard Minitrekking, rather than a different ice trek.
Big Ice with Optional Transfers
Big Ice is the choice for a longer glacier day. The approach and return are substantial parts of the effort, before and after the time spent in crampons. Keep the evening free rather than planning around the shortest advertised duration.
Big Ice at Perito Moreno Glacier
For eligible, fit hikers aged 18-50. A long glacier excursion with equipment and guiding. The linked seller offers versions with and without El Calafate transfers; the boardwalk visit is tied to the transfer option. Bring your own food and budget separately for park entry.
Sold by Gray Line Argentina, product 5239P71. Select the transfer option if needed. The checked listing offers cancellation up to 24 hours before departure; read the current conditions and participant requirements before paying.
Compare Perito Moreno Ice Treks
These are the operator’s published routes, checked on 28 October 2026. Times are approximate. The longer day includes road transport and a boardwalk visit; port-to-port time excludes both. Read the full eligibility conditions even when you fall within the stated age range.

| Trek | Ice time and total walking | Day with transfers / activity without transfers | Published ages and season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minitrekking | About 1 hour on ice within 3 hours of walking; medium demand | Roughly 9.5-10 hours / 4.5 hours port-to-port | 8-65; advertised year-round, subject to operation |
| Minitrekking 2 | About 1 hour on ice within 4 hours of walking; medium-high demand | Roughly 10 hours / 5 hours port-to-port | 12-60; 15 August-31 May, conditions permitting |
| Big Ice | About 3 hours on ice, with a much longer approach and return; high demand | Roughly 12 hours / 7.5 hours port-to-port | 18-50; 15 September-30 April |
The ice subgroup is a different number from the bus or seller’s booking group. Hielo & Aventura publishes up to 20 on the ice for either Minitrekking version, with a guide for each ten participants, and up to ten with two guides for Big Ice. A reseller’s smaller headline cap does not establish a private glacier walk.
Which Perito Moreno ice trek should you choose?
Choose standard Minitrekking if you want to try walking on glacier ice without committing to Big Ice’s long walking day. It still involves sustained walking on uneven ground. Choose Minitrekking 2 because you want the longer approach beside the glacier, rather than because the name sounds like an upgrade in ice time.
Choose Big Ice when three hours on the glacier are the main reason for the trip and its physical demands fit your abilities. The extra cost buys a longer excursion, not guaranteed access to a particular formation. If either eligibility or the walking feels unsuitable, the boardwalks and boat options give you a rewarding glacier visit without an ice trek.
Is Minitrekking 2 worth choosing instead?
Minitrekking 2 is worth choosing if you specifically want the longer coastal and moraine approach. The operator describes a roughly 5.5 km circuit, compared with about 3.5 km for standard Minitrekking. Both include around an hour on the ice.
Book it under the exact product name. Labels such as “Pro,” “Extended” and “2.0” do not by themselves establish which itinerary or eligibility rules apply. Use the operator’s Minitrekking 2 page to confirm the route and transfer option. We have not selected a Viator equivalent because the extended listing reviewed did not match the operator’s published age range.
Compare the Full Price Before Booking
Compare the final price for the same date, trek and transfer arrangement. A cheaper port-only fare leaves you to arrange the road journey and any boardwalk visit. A larger cancellation allowance may be useful on a trip with several connections, but only the selected seller’s written terms establish what is refundable.
| Budget item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Trek and boat crossing | Exact Minitrekking version or Big Ice; equipment and guiding included |
| Road transport | Return El Calafate transport, eligible pickup address and meeting time |
| Boardwalk visit | Whether it is included with your selected option, and the time allowed |
| Park entry | Separate unless explicitly included; use the official APN ticket portal for the correct Perito Moreno access |
| Food and clothing | Bring the required lunch, drinks, footwear and weather protection |
| Changes and cancellation | Seller’s local-time deadline, charges and treatment of operator cancellations |
Viator is our preferred booking route for the two matched products above, with the operator linked alongside. It is not a promise of the lowest fare. Compare the live checkout with the direct offer before deciding. The operator’s direct cancellation policy differs from the checked Viator policies; do not carry a refund promise from one booking channel to another.
Eligibility, Equipment and Confirmation
Check the operator’s complete physical and health restrictions before payment. The age limits are mandatory, and eligibility includes more than age. A booking platform’s generic accessibility label should never override the operator’s description of uneven walking and the requirements for the particular trek. Ask the operator to resolve any conflicting information before you pay.
Crampons and the specified technical equipment are supplied. You still need suitable footwear, waterproof layers, gloves and the food and drink requested in the trip instructions. Follow the confirmed kit list for your departure. The activity is guided throughout; it is not permission to explore the glacier independently.
Send the passenger details requested by the seller and wait for confirmation of places, pickup or port meeting time. If traveling together, request the same departure. A headline start time or an availability enquiry is not confirmation of the arrangement you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do Perito Moreno ice trekking without a guide?
Perito Moreno ice trekking must be booked as a guided excursion. An independent boardwalk visit does not provide access to the glacier surface.
Does the ice trek include the boardwalks?
The boardwalk visit depends on the product and transport option you book. The operator’s transfer programs include a visit; a port-only ticket leaves that part of the day to you. Check the selected option rather than relying on photographs of the walkways.
Is the Big Ice boat crossing a separate sightseeing cruise?
The Big Ice boat crossing is part of reaching the trek. Check its itinerary before adding another short glacier boat trip, which may repeat a similar view. A wider Lago Argentino cruise is a different excursion, compared in our El Calafate glacier tours guide.
Can you book an ice trek on a flight day?
We recommend keeping Perito Moreno ice trekking on a full day without a flight or long-distance bus connection. Pickup times, route order and return times can change, leaving too little margin for a fixed departure.
How We Compared These Ice Treks
This is a comparison of published operator and seller information, checked on 28 October 2026, rather than a firsthand review of every booking service. The table follows Hielo & Aventura’s linked product pages. The booking cards identify the Viator sellers and product codes, so you can distinguish the service on the ice from the company taking payment. Prices, places and refund terms must be confirmed for your date.
